The Driver's License Point System

In Colorado traffic law there are a number of ways a driver can lose their driving privileges.

Under Colorado traffic law, everyone starts out with a clean driving record, however, if a driver accumulates too many points against their driving record, within a certain time period (please see below) their driver's license will be suspended.

Each time an individual is convicted of a traffic violation in Colorado , the applicable county or municipal court will notify the Colorado Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division, and the specified number of points received will be posted on the individual's driving record. A conviction occurs when: a person pleads guilty, acknowledges guilt by paying a ticket, accepts a conviction as a result of a plea agreement, or in some circumstances, by default judgment due to the individual failing to appear in Court or pay the ticket.

Each type of conviction causes a certain number of points to be placed on a Colorado traffic record. Generally, the more serious the violation the greater number of points associated with it.

Points assessed against a Colorado traffic record are not erased when an individual obtains a new license or when the license is reinstated. Although older points may no longer have any significance in relation to a potential point suspension, they do not expire over time and will therefore remain on a Colorado driver's record.

The number of points accumulated within a designated time period that will cause a suspension of a Colorado driver's license, are as follows:

MINOR DRIVERS (UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE):

  • 6 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 7 points during the period of the license

MINOR DRIVERS (AGED BETWEEN 18 AND 21):

  • 9 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 12 points in any 24 consecutive months
  • 14 points during the period of the license

ADULT DRIVERS (AGED 21+):

  • 12 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 18 points in any 24 consecutive months

CHAUFFEUR POINTS:

  • 16 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 24 points in any 24 consecutive months
  • 28 points in any 48 consecutive months

Chauffeur Violations

It is important to remember that to be applicable, all chauffeur violations must have been received by a driver whilst they were using a motor vehicle that was in use as a public or common carrier (of people or property). If the driver did not receive all the points whilst they were operating a vehicle that was in use as a public or common carrier (of people or property), the point totals for an adult driver (non-chauffeur) will apply.
